Guide

Troubleshoot Prolific Notifications.

Fix StudyChime monitoring, browser notification, Discord, Telegram, Pushover, filter, schedule, and Premium activation problems.

Choose the symptom that best matches what you see. Start with the connection check before changing filters, credentials, or notification permissions.

Run one quick check

This separates a monitoring problem from an alert-delivery problem.

  1. Open https://app.prolific.com/studies and confirm you are signed in.
  2. Open StudyChime and select Check for studies.
  3. Review the latest check time and the Available, Matched, and Alerted counts.
  4. If you use Discord, Telegram, or Pushover, run its test in Settings → Alerts.

Connection

Monitoring and the Prolific page

Use these fixes when StudyChime cannot connect to or read the studies page.

Quick Start does not finish

Quick Start remains visible until StudyChime successfully reads the open Prolific studies page.

  1. Open https://app.prolific.com/studies.
  2. Sign in and leave the page open.
  3. On Connect the Prolific studies page, select Check connection.
  4. Select Enable and finish again.

StudyChime only reads the page during this check. It does not refresh Prolific or accept or reserve a study.

No studies are detected

StudyChime can detect only studies rendered on the open Prolific studies page.

  1. Confirm the page is open, fully loaded, and signed in.
  2. Check whether Prolific’s own filters are hiding studies.
  3. If the page is stuck or blank, reload it.
  4. Select Check for studies and review the Available count.
StudyChime says monitoring is inactive
  1. Confirm StudyChime is enabled in the popup or Settings → Overview.
  2. Keep the signed-in Prolific studies page open.
  3. Confirm Chrome has not disabled the extension or suspended background activity.
  4. Save pending settings, then select Check for studies.

The Monitoring confidence card shows the page connection, last successful read, and configured alert methods.

The Prolific tab closed

Open Settings → Overview, select Open Prolific, wait for the page to load, then select Check for studies. StudyChime does not reopen Prolific automatically.

Alerts arrive late, or a study is gone when opened

Keep the Prolific page open, Chrome running, and your computer awake. Select Check for studies when you want an immediate check. External providers can also introduce delivery delay.

StudyChime reports that a study was visible; it cannot reserve it. Increasing the minimum places filter can reduce alerts for studies likely to fill quickly.

Alert delivery

Notifications, sound, and providers

Run the relevant test first. A failed test points to permissions or provider setup rather than study matching.

Browser notifications do not show
  1. Enable browser notifications in Settings → Alerts.
  2. Allow notifications in Chrome and your operating system.
  3. Check Focus Assist, Do Not Disturb, or another quiet mode.
  4. Confirm StudyChime is enabled in chrome://extensions.
  5. Select Send browser test.
Sound alerts do not play
  1. Enable browser notifications and Play sound alert in Settings → Alerts.
  2. Check the volume, output device, and browser or system mute state.
  3. Try another StudyChime sound, then send a browser test.

Phone sounds are controlled separately by the provider app and your phone. See the notification sound instructions.

Discord test alert fails
  1. Confirm Discord alerts are enabled.
  2. Re-copy the webhook URL and remove extra spaces.
  3. Confirm the webhook exists and points to the intended channel.
  4. Save settings, then select Send Discord test.

If the webhook was deleted, exposed, or changed, create a new Discord webhook.

Telegram test alert fails
  1. Confirm Telegram alerts are enabled.
  2. Re-copy the bot token and chat ID and remove extra spaces.
  3. Start a chat with the bot. For a group, add the bot to that group.
  4. Save settings, then select Send Telegram test.

The token identifies the bot; the chat ID identifies the destination. See the Telegram setup guide.

Pushover test alert fails
  1. Confirm Pushover alerts are enabled.
  2. Re-copy the app token and user key and remove extra spaces.
  3. Confirm the account and receiving device are active and notifications are allowed.
  4. Save settings, then select Send Pushover test.

See the Pushover setup guide for where to find both values.

Rules

Matching, schedules, and quota

Use these fixes when tests succeed but expected live alerts still do not arrive.

A destination test passes but live alerts do not arrive

A successful test normally means the provider is configured correctly. Check that StudyChime is enabled, Prolific is open and signed in, the study passes every filter, the schedule allows the current time, alerts are not snoozed, and the free quota remains available.

Select Check for studies and compare the Available, Matched, and Alerted counts to see where delivery stopped.

The external-alert quota is reached

Free users receive up to 10 external alert batches in a rolling 24-hour period, shared across Discord, Telegram, and Pushover. A batch sent to several enabled providers uses one slot.

When the quota is exhausted—or its status cannot be confirmed—external delivery pauses. Browser notifications and local sounds continue. The popup and Settings → Alerts show the current quota.

Premium removes this external-alert limit.

Filters exclude too many studies

Temporarily lower or clear reward, hourly-rate, places, completion-time, and keyword rules. Most enabled filters use AND logic, so a study must pass each one.

An excluded keyword always rejects a study. GBP and USD thresholds are independent; StudyChime does not convert currencies. Use Preview matches, then see the filter guide for examples.

A schedule is blocking alerts
  1. Open Settings → Filters & schedule.
  2. Check that the current day and time are allowed.
  3. Confirm the intended profile was saved with Save & activate profile.
  4. Confirm Premium is active.

A manual check can confirm monitoring is connected even while a schedule pauses alerts.

Too many alerts arrive

Use snooze for a short break. For lasting control, raise the minimum reward, hourly rate, or places; limit completion time; add topic keywords; or restrict alerts to useful hours.

See the filters and schedules guides for the available controls.

Account and data

Premium, updates, and recovery

Fix licence checks, Remote snooze, extension updates, and local data imports.

Premium settings are ignored

Open Settings → Premium & trends and confirm Premium is active. If the key is missing, paste it again, select Activate, and save settings.

Premium normally remains available for up to 24 hours after its last successful verification. Reconnect to let StudyChime verify it.

A licence or free trial does not activate
  1. Copy the key again from the StudyChime confirmation page or trial or purchase email.
  2. Remove leading or trailing spaces.
  3. Check your connection and confirm StudyChime is current.
  4. Try Activate again.

A refunded, cancelled, expired, or already-used trial licence may not activate. See the Premium activation guide.

Remote snooze cannot create a secure push connection
  1. Confirm Premium or its trial is active and the browser is current.
  2. Check that a VPN, firewall, or DNS filter is not blocking browser push.
  3. Restart the browser, then enable Remote snooze again in Settings → Overview.

In Brave, enable Use Google services for push messaging at brave://settings/privacy, restart via brave://restart, and try again. See the Remote snooze guide.

Something changed after an extension update
  1. Reload the Prolific studies page.
  2. Open StudyChime and confirm your settings.
  3. Send a test alert, then select Check for studies.

Check the changelog for changes to permissions or behaviour.

Chrome disabled or removed StudyChime
  1. Open chrome://extensions and find StudyChime.
  2. Enable it, or reinstall it from the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Open Prolific, then select Check for studies.
A backup or Trends import looks incomplete

Settings backups deliberately exclude provider credentials, licence data, installation identifiers, notification mappings, and custom sound files. Imports replace included profiles and preferences rather than merging them. See the backup guide.

Trends CSV imports skip duplicate anonymised rows. Trends include only studies seen while monitoring is active and can be incomplete after the page, Chrome, or computer was closed, after sign-out, or after local data was cleared.
